NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (NRT) & TOBACCO CESSATION MEDICATIONS

WHAT IS IT?

Medications that have nicotine are called nicotine replacement medications or nicotine replacement therapy, also called NRT. These medications substitute for the nicotine from tobacco. They provide less nicotine than tobacco products, but usually enough to lessen withdrawal symptoms and cravings and increase your sense of control as you stop tobacco use. Forms of NRT include the patch, gum, lozenge, inhaler and nasal spray. Non-nicotine medications also can help. Non-nicotine medications include bupropion SR (sustained release) and varenicline.

The cessation options listed below are the seven FDA-approved tobacco cessation medications available that increase long-term tobacco use quit rates

OVER-THE-COUNTER NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

Nicotine Patch

Available in 21mg, 14 mg and 7 mg

Nicotine Gum

PRESCRIPTION NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY AND NON-NICOTINE MEDICATION

These four options require a prescription from a medical provider.

Varenicline (Chantix)

This medication does not contain nicotine and functions to block nicotinic receptors in the brain.

Bupropion

This medication does not contain nicotine. It is a pill to help decrease nicotine cravings and withdrawal.

Nicotine Nasal Spray

Nasal Spray is used to aid in cessation for the relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. It should be used as a part of a comprehensive behavioral tobacco cessation program.

Nicotine Inhaler

The inhaler is a mouthpiece and a plastic cartridge inserted into the mouthpiece prior to use. User inhales deeply into back of throat or puffs in short breaths. The nicotine turns into a vapor and is absorbed into your mouth and throat.
